Portsmouth Language College has devised an intensive (30 contact hours) pre-CELTA course that is designed to provide a solid introduction to the job of English language teacher in today’s world. This course is intended for completely new teachers and will prepare you for the intensive Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL course and give you the head start you will need to get a top grade on one of these courses.
The Portsmouth Language College Pre-CELTA course is highly enjoyable and friendly. We will encourage you to love teaching and the mechanics of the English Language so that you will become an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher anywhere in the world you wish to go.

In one intensive week, you will be introduced to all the major aspects of English language teaching and get a chance to teach a class for yourself! There are no assignments or essays on this course. Instead, we encourage students to work hard on their preparation for their teaching practice. The course will provide you with 90 minutes of observed teaching, in which you will be given comments on your performance afterwards.
The course is designed to be as enjoyable and educational as possible and is run by the Principal of Portsmouth Language College, who is a Cambridge-approved CELTA Teacher Trainer. We aim to build your confidence as a new teacher and will offer positive comments as well as constructive feedback on your teaching practice.
Entrance Requirements
A good, general education is needed (ideally to degree standard), but enthusiasm and a positive attitude are the most important qualities we look for.
At the end of the course
You will receive a College certificate and a detailed appraisal of your performance on the course that should provide you with speedy access onto a full CELTA or Trinity TESOL course or even into a job abroad!
